visitor counter

I would like to place a visitor counter and one gives a code, now would like to know how this works, so where do I put that code?
If anyone has experience with that, I would like to hear it ..
Do / do they now need the url of the site then I hear it thank you in advance ..where am i 192.168.8.1 192.168.100.1

I used that for a while on the previous version of this forum.
But I wouldn't know where to place it on this new update. Hopefully an admin over here can help you.
